Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program
Summit County SANE Program
In the United States, one sexual assault occurs approximately every two minutes. In Colorado alone, one in four women and one in 17 men will experience sexual assault in their lifetimes.
The Summit County SANE program was licensed in 2007; implemented in 2008, and the new SANE exam room at the hospital was opened in August, 2010. A generous gift from Linda and Mike Clem provided the funding that was needed to convert an Emergency Department exam room into the specially designated SANE exam room. The specialized SANE nurses provide compassionate, comprehensive medical care and evidence collection in the Emergency Department at St. Anthony Summit Medical Center. These nurses are also trained and available to provide expert witness testimony in court.
The SANE program works with Advocates for Victims of Assault and local law enforcement to address the needs of Summit County and surrounding areas in consistent, quality evidence collection and credible, neutral courtroom testimony. Advocates for Victims of Assault are dedicated to creating healthy, non-violent individuals, families and community through support, prevention and accountability. The SANE program provides a valuable community service that will help increase victim reporting rates and the prosecution rates of perpetrators.
